Psychodynamic & Trauma-Informed Counselling

Counsellor, working with adults and young people (13+), in Stroud and Cirencester

Hello, I’m Tamsyn. As a psychodynamic counsellor, I welcome adults and young people aged 13 and over. My aim is to create a warm, calm, and supportive space where you can pause, reflect, and explore whatever is on your mind. You’re welcome here whether you’re facing a crisis or simply feeling curious about your emotions, experiences, or what feels challenging right now.

I’m sensitive to how trauma and life experiences can impact us all, so I pay close attention to your safety, sense of choice, and the pace that feels right for you. As well as talking, I sometimes invite gentle embodied practices to help you feel more grounded and connected, especially when things feel overwhelming.

At the heart of my approach is a confidential and supportive relationship, shaped around what matters to you and what feels comfortable. With time, counselling can nurture greater self-understanding, resilience, and a steadier sense of balance in your life.

Counselling is not a one-size-fits-all process, and together we will find a way of working that feels most supportive for you. You’re welcome to explore my website to learn more about me and the different approaches I work with.

Approaches I use for counselling

  • Psychodynamic Counselling
Open-ended, long-term counselling offering in-depth exploration of your experience, past and present. I may draw on ideas from Mentalisation-Based Therapy (MBT) to support understanding of emotions and relationships.
  • Short-term counselling
A fixed number of sessions, with an emphasis on being more solution-focused and forward-thinking.
  • Trauma counselling
Working with the emotional, psychological, and bodily impact of trauma, with emphasis on safety, stabilisation, and pace. Where appropriate, this may include Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) to support careful processing and integration of traumatic experiences. I may also draw on ideas from Internal Family Systems (IFS) to explore different aspects of inner experience.
  • Proactive counselling for young people
Working creatively with young people to support emotional expression, understanding, and confidence in everyday life.

Each person’s experience in counselling is unique. Some may come for a few months to navigate a particular transition; others may choose longer-term work to explore more deeply rooted patterns, including the impact of traumatic experiences. There’s no one right way, the process unfolds in response to your needs, at your pace.

"HEALING ISN'T ABOUT RECOVERY; IT'S ABOUT DISCOVERY. DISCOVERING HOPE IN HOPELESSNESS, DISCOVERING AN ANSWER WHERE THERE DOESN'T SEEM TO BE ONE, DISCOVERING THAT IT'S NOT WHAT HAPPENS THAT MATTERS - IT'S WHAT YOU DO WITH IT"

About Me

With over 20 years’ experience in mental health, social care, and education, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside adults, children, and young people in many different settings. Throughout, I’ve supported people with a wide range of needs, including those with special educational needs (SEN), as well as individuals in recovery and the loved ones who care for them.

Alongside my private practice, I also work with a local charity dedicated to making counselling accessible to people across Gloucestershire. In this role, I support adults, children, young people, and schools, helping to provide compassionate care through their counselling and training services.

I also collaborate with MM Mentoring, a child-focused mentoring service in Gloucestershire that supports young people through education, life skills, and community engagement. My role involves offering therapeutic support to staff, creating a space for reflection and well-being. Click here for further details about MM Mentoring.

I’m deeply committed to ongoing learning, which I see as an essential part of offering the best support I can. Currently, I’m studying for a Post-Graduate Diploma in Trauma Counselling, which is enriching my ability to help clients find safety, process difficult experiences, and gently reconnect with life at their own pace.
